As lots of countries exist in the world with different culture,
society and environment, there are also a lot of exclusive issues and events
that I cannot experience in the Korea. From the cases in other countries, we
can compare to Korea’s similar issues and get the insight of potential social
problems. However, since those events written in articles can be accessed by
reading or watching via news and internet for specific information, it is not
easy to see those events in a more comprehensive view and have a practical perspective
of circumstances. I choose three articles related to Australia to which I have
been for several months, because I can associate my real experiences in
Australia with those articles. First article is about poor prices for kangaroo
meat by Won Ji Hye. Second article is about Australian gay couple who married
in British consulate by Boo Jung Soo. Last article is about the success of new
packaging law for cigarette which was established to decrease the smoking rate
by Lee Hong Woo.
I saw the article about poor price of kangaroo meat in
Australia in Won Ji Hye's blog, and I choose this article because I think the
future of kangaroo meet industry will not be getting better. According to the
article, even though all the costs related to hunting for kangaroo have
increased, the price of kangaroo has not been changed and maintained the low
price. Because of decreasing profit for hunting kangaroo, the kangaroo industry
is in the deep recession right now and this situation will be continued if
supply still exceeds demand of kangaroo meat in the future. Won Ji Hye said, according
to the law of supply and demand, this gap between supply and demand will be
resolved automatically in the course of time. Since lots of hunters are leaving
this industry which will cause low supply of kangaroo meat, the price will be
rise in the end. However, I disagree with her idea that price of kangaroo meat
will rise by decrease of supply and I think application of economical model is
also wrong. Even though the supply will decrease, major problem is that there
is a low possibility for the increase of demand from common people. Kangaroo
meat is not popular, because it is too tough to eat and taste is not good
compare to chicken or pork. As there is high possibility that demand of
kangaroo meat will just stay in the low status, it cannot be assured that price
of meat will rise according to economical model.
In Boo Jung Soo's blog, I saw the article about gay couple who
married under British law in Australia where actually same sex marriage is not
permitted and I was surprised because I thought Australia already permitted
same-gender marriage. In the article, a gay couple, Gordon and Peter, had to
marry in the Australia British consulate, because only British law permits same
sex marriage. Boo Jung Soo thinks that same sex marriage should be permitted by
law not only in Australia but also in other countries, because gay couple also
have right to be treated equally as common marriage couple. I agree with his
idea that gay marriage should be legally permitted by whole countries. Since I
could see lots of events for gay in Australia such as 'Mardi Grass', the
biggest gay festival in the world, and there was even a gay street called
'Oxford Street' which has lots of gay bars and clubs, I thought gay's right for
marriage was already permitted in Australia. It seems that awareness of gay
problem is familiar comparing to any other countries in Australia, so I think approval
of gay people's right will be easier.
In Lee Hong Woo's blog, I read the article that the new
packaging law of cigarette for warning the smokers seems effective to decrease
the smoking rate and I selected this article because I doubt that the packaging
law is really the main reason for dropping consumption of cigarettes to heavy
smokers who have smoked a lot and for a long time. According to the article,
after the mandatory packaging law that removed the logo and only put the
pictures of cancer patients, consumption of smoking dropped significantly
including youth smoking rate. Lee Hong Woo was positive to this law in terms of
effect for preventing the smoking, because smoking is not good for anything. He
said there are lots of reasons to quit the smoke such as health problems and
harm to secondhand smokers. Even I agree that the packaging law contributed to
decrease of smoking rate in a way, I doubt that heavy smokers are also really
affected by this new law. They are the person who kept smoking in spite of they
already know all the related problems by smoking from lots of public advertisements
or documentary in media. As they kept smoking even they know the bad effects of
cigarettes, I think just showing the more harmful images via package was not
effective to them.
The same issues of those articles
have not appeared in Korea, but some of them have possibility to occur. For
example, as same sex marriage is also illegal in Korea, some gay couple can
marry in the consulate of British in Korea. Also, as smoking rate is serious
problem in Korea, government can come up with the idea of making the packaging
law. However, I think problem with market for kangaroo meat will never happen
in Korea, because natural kangaroo does not exist in here. I only agreed with one
idea about gay couple's marriage and I disagreed with other people's idea for
the reasons based on my experience in Australia. I could argue my idea in
practical stances considering the real situation in Australia and it made me
keep on comprehensive perspective while I read those articles.
